Clue Setting Challenge

After over two years of meeting purely to take on other peoples' crossword clues - as set in national newspapers and websites - we were given a challenge to try writing some clues of our own. This was a cross-u3a activity, coming from a suggestion by the leader of Knutsford u3a's crossword group, and involving several different North West u3a branches. Each took a turn to produce a set of clues for the groups at the other u3a's attempt to solve, and to also give some feedback on how professional and entertaining we'd managed to be.

When it was our turn, we had to choose a theme, and then try to use a whole assortment of clue types to lead to answers fitting this theme. We opted for clues leading to the names of alcoholic drinks - beers, wines, cocktails, whatever. Several of our group members came up with initial ideas, then we had a session to pick out and refine a final set to submit.

We're now sharing our efforts here, so visitors to our group page - familiar with how cryptic clues work - can see how they get on with these too.

Links here will give you access to the clues and to the solutions.
