If you are unfamiliar with cryptic crosswords, then you probably want to know more about what is involved.
Unlike concise or general knowledge crosswords, cryptic puzzles have clues which are more than a simple definition of what the answer is - they will have a definition at either the start or end of the clue, but there will also be extra detail to provide some kind of wordplay or hints to help reach the correct answer. See the link 'Cryptics Introduction' below for an example of this,
However solve a full cryptic grid, you first need to get familiar with lots of different styles of clue setting and how you can work out what kind of 'riddle' to work through for each of these. But if you already enjoy word puzzles and thinking a bit outside the box, then (once you get a bit of practice) you will probably find cryptic clues far more enjoyable - and easier - to solve than those in more basic puzzles.
if you already know the basics of Cryptic Crosswords but want to brush up on the jargon and techniques, then you might also want to check out the beginners notes below. These work through the different types of clue, individually, with example and practice exercises (answers included at base of the page). Good preparation before joining the improvers group.
Then just come along to enjoy the experience of working as a group - discuss with the rest of the group what you think the clue format is and what is the definition and what is the wordplay. Pool your knowledge and vocabulary and just have a laugh over a cup of coffee. Follow enquiry link on main group page if you have any further questions.
