Group Leader Guidance Pack

When someone steps forward to act as a group leader, there’s no one set way of doing things. You don’t have to get everything in hand yourself from day one, and you don’t have to be the one and only person who has to do everything.

The task of running an activity or interest group can be kept reasonably simple. At its core, the leader’s job is basically to just co-ordinate getting the group members together and to take part in the activity themselves.

For getting started, the group co-ordinator will help you come up with a plan to get the group launched, and then they or another leader can be a mentor to answer any questions and suggest existing tried-and-tested processes to follow to draw on other peoples' experience.

As you get more relaxed into the role, or if you have run groups previously, you may then want to take on a wider role, to find your own ways to administer and publicise the group. Please note, however, that this is ONLY if you prefer to do things for yourself, and only to the extent that you’re comfortable with.

Much of the information in this section may have no relevance to your group, but it is here to refer to if required. The information provided here is NOT intended as something to read from start to finish, but rather as a reference to dip into if the group co-ordinator recommends you look at a particular document, or if you want to take on extra aspects of the leader's role (such as doing your own publicity) or if an unusual situation arises.
