Whisky Appreciation

Status:Active, full but can join waiting list
Group email: Whisky Appreciation group
When: One-Off dates
Venue: Varying Locations

For those of us who appreciate the craftsmanship and diversity to be found in different whiskies - whether from Scotland, Ireland, USA or more. Most meetings will be for local tasting sessions, however we may vary this with visits to distillers and distributors who can introduce us to new brands and share more knowledge of the production process. The tasting sessions will be held at approximately two month intervals,

In an initial meeting in August 2025, we started with the basics on styles of Scottish Malts, the techniques and jargon to identify features of each, and how these can be mapped onto different scales such as light to rich, delicate to peaty. Held in a local micro pub, the Open Arms on Wigan Lane, this served up 4 single measures, water and pretzels to clear the palate, and then a grazing board of food to tuck into to follow. A really enjoyable night, and planning to return to the same venue but for a different selection of tastes shortly. The whiskies on offer will both draw from the pub's own extensive selection, plus more unusual one-off choices to specifically illustrate particular distillation and blending styles,

Numbers however are limited, both to fit around a single table and to be able to share our opinions easily. For this reason, we are not planning to recruit more people into the group as it stands. New dates will be advertised only to those already on the mailing list, and session places available on a first come basis,

If we do arrange visits to distilleries and events, these will shown on the main events page, and so be available to all members. However in the meantime happy to add more names to a stand-by list in case the pub runs any tasting sessions twice, or if we have occasional vacancies at regular sessions, or add other local dates. Just use the group email link above to let me know you are a fellow whisky enthusiast.
